Tip: Have a Plan, But Leave Room for Growth

Usually, it's best to know how your story is going to end before you start writing it. You may not know exactly how your main character will get from point A to point B, but as long as you have a basic framework, your plot and subplots will fall into place as you develop the draft, and this will eventually create a cohesive storyline.

With this in mind, you can create a detailed outline if you choose, or you could simply build a list of chapters and construct a basic plan for what has to happen in each chapter for the story to progress the way you want it to. Whatever method you choose though, you must allow for possible plot twists, new characters, and fresh ideas as they come to you. It would be a mistake to have a plan so strict that anything unexpected would destroy the story or prompt a case of writer's block. Writing is a long process, and as we go along we must be able to adjust our story as it expands from a simple thought into something truly great.

Having a solid foundation of ideas is always the right way to begin, but don't let your plan limit your creativity. Structure your story in such a way that it is stable and well thought out, yet flexible enough to grow.

Happy writing! :)
